Johnston is inspired by the beauty and diversity found in people, nature and everyday life.
Her favorite way of painting is “alla prima” (all at once) whenever possible.  There exists a short window of time to capture a moment’s changing light, texture, color, flow and mood that makes painting in this way a challenging and exciting experience.
Johnston works mostly in pastels and oils painting figures, still lives and landscapes.  She is part of the Winona Figure Drawing Group and has taught figure drawing at SMU and the MCA.
Johnston attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and St. Mary’s University in Winona.
She currently teaches workshops at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts.
